One of my top favorites from SXSW, Cayucas have just announced their US tour dates, and they are playing everywhere! They have also released another single East Coast Girl which is every bit as catchy and beach ready as the others. I listened to this album during our past snowstorms in an effort to force summer, and today it’s sunny, so thank you, Cayucas! Can’t wait for the Denver show on June 22nd, I look forward to shooting the band with more than an iPhone.

Music in Denver 4/24-4/30

Wednesday, April 24
Captured by Robots – 3 Kings – San Francisco musician and his band of robots. Saw this guy once on accident years ago, had no idea what was going on: Captured by Robots live video

Shovels and Rope – Bluebird – folk duo, tambourines, keyboards, happy sounds

Thursday, April 25
MTHDS – Casselman’s – nice guys that sing and rap about love and sexiness and nail Beastie Boy covers

Friday, April 26
The Men – Hi Dive – great band whose newest album has a whole different sound, can’t wait for this show: full KEXP performance

Rastasaurus and Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Revue – Cervantes – Rob Eaton of Dark Star Orchestra joins many talented musicians for a night of the Grateful Dead. Local favorites Rastasaurus are bringing their party as well.

Bonobo w/ El Ten Eleven – Ogden – drums, bass, looping pedals, interesting dance music from both acts, heavy on the pretty: Bonobo video that is wacky

Face to Face – Gothic – California punk, feel like a teenager again

Saturday, April 27
RJD2 and Disco Biscuits – Red Rocks – the snow is melting, it’s going to be beautiful Saturday, I am so in. Will be dorking it up front row with earplugs. Laserama.

Imperial Teen – Hi Dive – one of my favorite late 90’s pop supergroup are back, including a collaborator from that dog., who wrote my favorite 90’s pop song: He’s Kissing Christian

Sunday, April 28
James Blake – Ogden – people love him, the genius is in the simplicity apparently. I don’t hear it but maybe you will.

Monday, April 29
Gaslight Anthem – Ogden – the bands from Coachella are making the rounds to Denver this week.

The Veils – Larimer Lounge – they get compared to Joy Division a lot, never seen them live, they’ve got this hat: The Veils

Tuesday, April 30
Rodriguez w/Jenny O. – 1st Bank Center – the guy from Searching for Sugarman, I saw this show at Antone’s in Austin last October, he tuned his guitar about half the time and one woman stood on a collapsible stool. Big presence, he has gotten used to being on stage now, so this will be a very interesting, moving and memorable night. The opener Jenny O. is a talented, smart songwriter, and wrote my most listened to song of last year: catchy, catchy, catchy

New Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu is Funky!

20130422-182435.jpg

First time I had ever even heard of Janelle Monae was when she opened for MGMT at Red Rocks. I stood there floored watching this beautiful tiny James Brown-esque woman dance and strut and sing her heart out, and I’ve been crazy about her ever since. She just changed record labels, teamed up with Erykah Badu for her new single off her sophomore album, and it’s a tasty funky treat. On sale at iTunes at midnight, her record label just released it on soundcloud:

No Joy – Band to Watch

20130416-174138.jpg

Montreal’s No Joy has a new album coming out next Tuesday, and wow is it good. We got twelve inches of snow at my house. I think that’s unnecessary on April 17th, and this album made me feel like I was being pulled out of a sleepy cold state into a colorful spring. They pack layer upon layer of fuzz beautifully, all with pretty vocals dreamily floating on top. Man, this snow makes me want ice cream. They are supporting the album release with a North American tour, and they are opening for Metz at Hi Dive in Denver, May 7th. (Hey Houston they are playing at Fitz next week!!) NEW RILO KILEY!! Unreleased Tracks on New Album

20130327-110121.jpg still from “Portions for Foxes”

My life is complete. Next month an album of unreleased tracks, B-Sides and rarities will be released by Rilo Kiley. Just got the advance copy and this Jenny Lewis obsessive is in LOVE. Every single song is just perfect, and fans will be ecstatic. No need to comment on any different kind of sound, this is the early Rilo Kiley you love. Can the Postal Service Red Rocks show come any sooner??

Boats – catchy indie pop, goes great with water activities

20130325-151826.jpg photo by leslieloudspeaker

Boats out of Winnipeg are really getting some buzz. Noisy pop with hooks galore, and great lyrics about unusual themes. The first time I heard “Great Skulls” I just hit repeat repeat repeat. Stream the album for free at Kill Rock Stars.

You Me & Us – Fuzzy Beach Pop Punk

20130322-224015.jpg photo by leslieloudspeaker

You Me & Us Just the distorted sweet but irritated vocals beachy fuzzy pop punk I’ve been looking for. There will obviously be many comparisons to Rilo Kiley, but You Me & Us get the point across in two minute punches that pack a lot of bite. Listen and download their EP in its’ entirety here and see them live ASAP: You Me & Us and tour schedule (and no, it doesn’t quite make sense to me either unless they book way in advance): You Me & Us Tour Dates
