Tweens “Be Mean” is a perfect mix of bratty and sweet

Tweens

Cincinatti’s Tweens got a sweet break when Shake It Records owner Jim Blaze recommended them to Kim Deal of The Breeders as an opening act, and their perfect bratty garage pop sound influenced by Bay Area punks ended up keeping them around for the whole tour. Bridget Battle has a clarity in both her voice and lyrics that makes their music so easy to listen to, and the rough garage production is a nice yin to her Juliana Hatfield-crossed-with-The-Donnas like vocals’ yang. This spring they will be touring with Waxahatchee and Murder City Devils, but I’m most pumped to check them out at SXSW. Listen to “Be Mean” below, love the last little push of awesomeness at the end.

New EELS Video!

20130712-102509.jpg

EELS are one of my all time favorite bands, there is no band that sounds like them, courtesy of lead man Mark Oliver Everett’s brilliant, poignant lyrics and scratchy, soulful voice. Their latest album Wonderful, Glorious is out now, and they just released the video for “Kinda Fuzzy”, which depicts E as an alcoholic clown hosting a children’s show (little Krusty the Clown, anyone?). They just finished a successful US tour, and are about to embark on their World tour. This is EELS at their wittiest and best. Watch the video here: “Kinda Fuzzy”

UPDATE: They just released it on youtube five minutes ago: Youtube link to “Kinda Fuzzy”

In other CO news, Tame Impala are playing two Colorado shows in Denver and Boulder at the end of October with openers White Denim!!! These guys have blown up in the past two years, and for good reason, they have a huge sound and are good looking. Ive been watching White Denim for years since they were based out of Austin, amazing to watch their success. It’s been awhile since either came through, can’t wait for the shows.

Pickwick at ETown – Concert Review and Photos and how Lou Reed is Involved

20130509-114153.jpg photo by leslie loudspeaker

Last night in Boulder, Pickwick had their final stop of their tour at ETown, a live music radio show taping that will be heard by millions. Yet another band I found at sxsw, this Seattle group is unique, talented, and best of all, good guys. During the ETown interview, they were asked how they got their name. They told everyone that Lou Reed used to be a songwriter for Pickwick Records, and they asked him to write a hit like “The Twist”. Being Lou Reed and all, he wrote a song called “The Ostrich” that was weird and failed big time. Here is Pickwick covering the song: The Ostrich

They started the show with Lady Luck, one of the catchiest covers I’ve ever heard and been listening to nonstop, so I was instantly pumped. The rest of the songs were fantastic singles from their new album that was released Tuesday, get it here.

Galen Disston is a huge talent with a huge voice, he can hit notes higher than most women. When they were asked how the band manages to stay so friendly with each other, they replied “We actually go to a band psychologist. Is that too Seattle?” However Seattle it is, it’s working. I love to see a band interacting and smiling at each other, they wear their love and excitement on their sleeves.

DADS sign to 6131 Records and tour dates announced!

Uploaded with Imgupr

New Jersey two-piece DADS just signed with 6131 Records, causing them to release a new EP and tour this summer! These guys have a wonderful sound, reminding me a little of Pinback vocally with great upbeat guitar licks and crashing percussion. They remind me of working in skate shops as a teen, something very free and earnest about them. Listen to their debut album here, American Radass

And check them out live! They’ll be in Denver July 8th at Circle Music Collective.

No Joy – Band to Watch

20130416-174138.jpg

Montreal’s No Joy has a new album coming out next Tuesday, and wow is it good. We got twelve inches of snow at my house. I think that’s unnecessary on April 17th, and this album made me feel like I was being pulled out of a sleepy cold state into a colorful spring. They pack layer upon layer of fuzz beautifully, all with pretty vocals dreamily floating on top. Man, this snow makes me want ice cream. They are supporting the album release with a North American tour, and they are opening for Metz at Hi Dive in Denver, May 7th. (Hey Houston they are playing at Fitz next week!!) Tour dates and new single in the link below:

Phish Tour Tickets OBTAINED

20130328-134353.jpg photo by Andee Kuroda

Besides keeping up with new music, I’m a major Phish fan. Today was a day of Ticketmaster madness, but through Ticketmaster skills and a LOT of kindness from my fellow Phish obsessives, I’m in for Toronto, San Francisco, Tahoe and Hollywood Bowl so far. All I have to worry about is SPAC and Dick’s.

UPDATE in for SPAC and Chicago. Follow my blog this July, will be reporting the kooky scene I adore from the field.
