J Mascis Covers Mazzy Star, Designs Shoe

In the latest of their rockstar collaborations, KEEP Shoes had amp rock genius J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. design a shoe with the detail of his guitar strap down the back. The shoes came with a single that has a cover of Mazzy Star‘s “Fade Into You”. It keeps the same melancholy mood, but J brings more dusty, country wisdom and pain to the song, similar to when Johnny Cash covered Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” (except not near as heartbreakingly painful to listen to). Check out the cover over at Pitchfork today, it’s beautiful: J Mascis “Fade Into You”

People are buzzing about a new Boards of Canada vinyl single that they released on Record Store Day on 4/20. It has been confirmed to be real, apparently they just snuck a few out there and one lucky Redditor got one! I loved the last album they put out in 2005, this has been long awaited. There’s also hubbub over at one of their videos on youtube, if you read the comments people are Nancy Drew-ing and finding clues regarding a possible release date:

No Joy – Band to Watch

20130416-174138.jpg

Montreal’s No Joy has a new album coming out next Tuesday, and wow is it good. We got twelve inches of snow at my house. I think that’s unnecessary on April 17th, and this album made me feel like I was being pulled out of a sleepy cold state into a colorful spring. They pack layer upon layer of fuzz beautifully, all with pretty vocals dreamily floating on top. Man, this snow makes me want ice cream. They are supporting the album release with a North American tour, and they are opening for Metz at Hi Dive in Denver, May 7th. (Hey Houston they are playing at Fitz next week!!)
