New Quilt single sounds like melodic sunshine

Quilt‘s self titled debut album in 2011 was one of my most repeated albums of last year (got on the ship a little late), and the new single they just released has me hitting repeat more than once already today. This trio has such a beautifully recorded throwback 60’s sound, but it’s modern and dreamy in just the right way. With member of Woods and producer Jarvis Tavaniere working with them, the new single is quick and gorgeous, Anna Fox Rochinski’s vocals sounding like an angel; not all Mariah Carey squealing on high, just soothing and soaring. The Blank Tapes – Band to Watch

20130626-141528.jpg

If you are a fan of Foxygen or The Monkees then you will love this band. They have that throwback 60’s sound nailed, and it sounds like sunshine, perfect for summer. The Southern California mastermind behind it all, Matt Adams, is a garage 8-track junkie influenced by The Kinks, and oh does it show, and his songs are fantastic. California is really coming out with a lot of timeless California beach music lately, I’m loving it. They will be playing Hi Dive this Sunday, I see big things for them. I mean, look how cool they look:

Tame Impala Announces Colorado Tour Dates

20130625-130859.jpg

In other CO news, Tame Impala are playing two Colorado shows in Denver and Boulder at the end of October with openers White Denim!!! These guys have blown up in the past two years, and for good reason, they have a huge sound and are good looking. Ive been watching White Denim for years since they were based out of Austin, amazing to watch their success. It’s been awhile since either came through, can’t wait for the shows.

New JEFF the Brotherhood single off free Adult Swim album available May 6th

20130502-092336.jpg

I loooove JEFF the Brotherhood, from their adorable brotherly relationship, to their see through instruments (done well before the new Daft Punk video with clear instruments) to their fuzz filled sonic noisescapes they create. Cartoon Network Adult Swim has created a compilation of unreleased songs called Garage Swim, of which they have already put out a song by Thee Oh Sees. It will be free for everyone on May 6th at adultswim.com. Check out the JtB song right now as well as the track listing with songs by Black Lips, King Tuff, all the goods.

Personal tidbit- I’ve been in the Adult Swim offices. They have AstroTurf for a carpet and huge Space Ghost and Boba Fett costumes. Neat-o.

No Joy – Band to Watch

20130416-174138.jpg

Montreal’s No Joy has a new album coming out next Tuesday, and wow is it good. We got twelve inches of snow at my house. I think that’s unnecessary on April 17th, and this album made me feel like I was being pulled out of a sleepy cold state into a colorful spring. They pack layer upon layer of fuzz beautifully, all with pretty vocals dreamily floating on top. Man, this snow makes me want ice cream. They are supporting the album release with a North American tour, and they are opening for Metz at Hi Dive in Denver, May 7th. (Hey Houston they are playing at Fitz next week!!) Quilt – Band to Watch

20130414-123221.jpg

Quilt out of Boston came out a couple years ago with all those chillwave bands, but their LP just got repressed and their sound fits right in with the current 60’s folk resurgence going on with a dash of Fiery Furnaces. They also have a split record out with MMOSS, a recent fave of mine. They are playing with Akron/Family on 4/21 in Boston, wish I could be there!

Kinski- new album, new sound

20130405-194352.jpg album cover

Kinski from Seattle with Kill Rock Stars have been making their fuzzed out, wildly psychedelic hard rock music for over a decade. The new album Cosy Moments shows a more pop sound, and I love it, especially considering I never expected another album! All the fuzz and garage and over layering are still there, but melodies are stronger, everything just sounds more blissful and ethereal. Listen to track 3, “Skim Milf”, it’s under two minutes, if you like it then you’ll love the 6-8 minute stuff. For the space rock of old, check out track 9, “We Think She’s A Nurse”. I haven’t seen them live (rare!) and their tour dates seem to stick around the East Coast. Come to Denver! We like music!

New Black Angels Album Streaming Now

20130326-130532.jpg photo by Black Angels

When I moved back to Austin in 2009, an old college friend introduced me to Christian Bland the very first day. All I knew was that he was a tall, sweet guy who could really rock a striped shirt. 20 something The Black Angels shows later, I am a total fangirl. These guys caused the resurgence of psych rock in Austin and run Austin Psych Fest, now 6 years running. Couldn’t be more proud or more excited about their success and only see them getting bigger. The new album is streaming today, and it’s wonderful as expected. Root for these guys, they work hard and are kind people.

Akron/Family “Sub Genres” new album review

Akron/Family – This crazy experimental rock band from indie label Dead Oceans is famous for their wild, high energy live shows. The new album captures the joy and fun you feel at the shows perfectly. Layered and hypnotic, this album gets you to that blissful level. It kicks off with a bang with “No Room”, linked below, and the album blends so cohesively all the way to “Samurai”, leaving you with a feeling of peaceful calm. Fans of their earlier work are going to love this. They will be playing in Denver at the Larimer Lounge on 4/10, buy your ticket now, it will sell out.
