New David Byrne Song and Video are Gorgeous

20130718-081808.jpg

I had the fortune of seeing David Byrne and St. Vincent last week, and surprise, surprise, it was one of the best shows I’ve seen, just perfectly put together and such a celebration of life. So corny, but it’s true! Anyway, been on a bigger Byrne kick than usual lately, so I’m ecstatic that he and Jherek Bischoff released a video for a new song they worked on together for Bischoff’s debut solo album, and it’s just sublime. String sections making me feel like I’m on a Parisian honeymoon, close ups of Byrne’s eyes making me feel like I’m in a Stanley Kubrick film. Brilliant.

My Schedule and Picks for The UMS

20130717-200453.jpg

Starting tomorrow in Denver, The UMS aka Underground Music Showcase explodes into every venue down Broadway. I’ve spent years going to SXSW in Austin, and have learned that the key to getting the most out of festivals like this involves lots of planning and research, then willingness to throw your schedule to the side when your ear hears something it likes. I’ve created a schedule of the bands I’d be seeing if I were going (I’ve got Phish in Chicago). Drink lots of water, and jot down notes of bands that stand out to you, it can be a whirlwind! Shows This Week in Denver

Tuesday, July 16

New Kids on the Block/98 Degrees/Boyz II Men – 1st Bank – where women in their late 30’s go to act like Beliebers. Hate all you want, but their song “Tonight” is pop perfection that could fit on Sgt. Pepper (seriously): live video of “Tonight”

Peter Murphy/ OURS – Summit Music Hall – former singer of Bauhaus, OG Goth

John Mayer – Red Rocks – take away the celebrity and he’s one of the best modern blues guitarists I’ve seen

Wednesday, July 17

Herbie Hancock tribute – Cervantes – this will be hot

Greg Garrison Trio and Andy Thorn – The Armoury – Leftover Salmon’s magic fingered picker joins the stage at this Wednesday’s residency, go early, it WILL fill up

Groundscore – Park House – great bluegrass at a great little venue

Thursday, July 18

Bruce Hornsby – Denver Botanical Gardens (York) – I’m a Deadhead. I will see anyone that ever played with them. That’s just the way it is.

Prairie Home Companion – Red Rocks – Garrison Keillor brings his distinct voice to the monoliths. If it doesn’t rain this will be a wonderful night.

The UMS – I’ll have a guide to the showcase for everyone tomorrow.

Friday, July 19

Blake’s Tiger Party – Bar Standard – this should be a great dance party, final installment of Denver Disco and Road to Phibstock parties, previous ones have been a lot of fun. Info here!

The UMS

Saturday, July 20

The UMS

Jimmy Eat World – Ogden – always had a soft spot for these guys, they sound fantastic live

Kenny Chesney – Sports Authority – I’m not really saying I’d go to this, but I’d love to rubberneck the parking lot. Did you SEE what the people in Pittsburgh did?? I’d imagine the Denver scene would have recycling bins everywhere: trash and fighting video

John Statz – Walnut Room – songwriter with a playful twinkle in his eye, he’s a lot of fun

Foxfield Four – Gothic – local band heavily influenced by Ben Folds and Jerry Lee Lewis. If you like super catchy poppy goodness, check them out: listen here, so so good

Sunday, July 21

Flaming Lips New Video “Turning Violent” is downright normal!

20130715-143628.jpg

Flaming Lips released the video for “Turning Violent” today and there’s no naked Erykah Badu being covered in goo, just standard shots of a white room, the band, and Wayne in all his curly haired gloriousness with some of Gwen Stefani’s face jewels from 1997 on. You get glimpses of their new stage setup with frenetic spasms of rainbow lasers and lights shocking you into a world of technicolor as tinfoil receptors hang overhead. Oh, and glitter of course. It’s as minimal as a video with lasers and tinfoil can be.

Watch the video here: Flaming Lips “Turning Violet”

On top of that, Wayne has a comic book called “The Sun is Sick” coming out this Wednesday at Comiccon in San Diego, and onsale on his website the week after. Want.

J Mascis Covers Mazzy Star, Designs Shoe

20130715-131144.jpg

In the latest of their rockstar collaborations, KEEP Shoes had amp rock genius J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. design a shoe with the detail of his guitar strap down the back. The shoes came with a single that has a cover of Mazzy Star‘s “Fade Into You”. It keeps the same melancholy mood, but J brings more dusty, country wisdom and pain to the song, similar to when Johnny Cash covered Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” (except not near as heartbreakingly painful to listen to). Check out the cover over at Pitchfork today, it’s beautiful: J Mascis “Fade Into You”

Listen to the new Edward Sharpe Today!!

20130715-102529.jpg

Want to have a great day? Listen to the new self-titled Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes album today on NPR! I had the pleasure of hearing them play one of the new songs at their Red Rocks show, “Remember to Remember”, an all Jade torch song and it was an instant classic. I’ve been crazy waiting to hear the rest ever since, and my high expectations are completely met. They make such sweet, sweet music, and this album of salvation continues in that vein. It has a fuzzier tone, almost like it’s an old vinyl playing (although that might be the NPR music player). “Let’s Get High” is as celebratory as it gets, while “This Life” (currently listed on NPR as “Life Is Hard”, I imagine that will get fixed) starts sounding like a Jeff Buckley song, then brings a Motown mixed with tent revival sound that these guys do so well. “They Were Wrong” could sit right next to The Beatles “Octopus’s Garden” on an album, no problem. Listen here today: new Edward Sharpe link

The Octopus Project “Fever Forms” – Band to Watch

20130712-134726.jpg

The Octopus Project are one of Austin’s most interesting bands. Part performance art, part experimental pop, part pure magic. On July 9th, they released their fifth album Fever Forms, and I can’t get enough of it. Their songs are not necessarily verse-chorus-verse, sometimes just instrumental, repeating a musical theme, and then layering and layering sounds and instruments until you get the most glorious peaks and dense, lush soundscapes. On top of that, it’s danceable progrock. The album opens with “The Falls”, an onslaught of electric guitar licks, aaaaahhh’s, and fantastic frenetic beats. There’s a very epic feel to “The Mythical E.L.C.”, all charging drums and bouncy basslines layered upon each other until they create a wall of blissful sound. And that’s before the vocals have even started! My favorite track on the album is the more traditional “The Man with the Golden Hand”, a great major key bonanza that is reminiscent of Passion Pit and Generationals, as bleeps and bops from synths come from every angle. Makes me think of dancing in the sun. “Sharpteeth” closes out the album with catchy, poppy synths rocking out until only one is left, trailing off into the night, leaving a great ending note on the album. As you can see, lots of adjectives describe The Octopus Project. While they have a great cult following in Austin, this album really represents their live show well, and will definitely garner them new fans.

Check out the first single: “Whitby”

And watch the video for their second single: “Sharpteeth”

And by all means, go see them live!

New EELS Video!

20130712-102509.jpg

EELS are one of my all time favorite bands, there is no band that sounds like them, courtesy of lead man Mark Oliver Everett’s brilliant, poignant lyrics and scratchy, soulful voice. Their latest album Wonderful, Glorious is out now, and they just released the video for “Kinda Fuzzy”, which depicts E as an alcoholic clown hosting a children’s show (little Krusty the Clown, anyone?). They just finished a successful US tour, and are about to embark on their World tour. This is EELS at their wittiest and best. Watch the video here: “Kinda Fuzzy”

UPDATE: They just released it on youtube five minutes ago: Youtube link to “Kinda Fuzzy”

New F*ck Buttons out July 23, and it’s as good as expected. Better!

20130629-121351.jpg

This noisy UK duo finally have a new album coming out July 23, and oh is it good, immediately grabs you. These guys sure can make a lot of noise for two people, and the new album “Slow Focus” is no different, also being the first album of theirs that they produced. They got a huge amount of attention when a few of their songs were played by Danny Boyle during the crazy London Olympic opening ceremony, but they didn’t water down their sound for the masses with the new release, thankfully. Here is the Olympic Ceremony Link 2012, where most Americans were first introduced to them. Then listen to and watch the video for new track: The Red Wing . Pretty commanding stuff. There’s only seven songs on this album, but they are often pretty long, these guys aren’t afraid to take their time making a point.

I’d shelve this new album next to Flaming Lips “The Terror” in the end-of-the-world genre, beats this heavy and aggressively driving go best with the apocalypse.
