More Musical Finds from SXSW

Haley Bonar – As I was catching some air conditioning in a friend’s car who works for SXSW (hey Tara at Roadway Productions!) I heard a familiar sound. Rolled down the window and there at the Doritos’ BoldStage was Haley Bonar, singing “Bad Reputation”, which I’ve heard many times on NPR. Playing both guitar and organ while looking damn cute doing it, Haley commanded the stage with her sweet voice and fantastic backing band. She’s recorded with Andrew Bird, and has a side project called Gramma’s Boyfriend, a “no-wave, new wave, punkish kind of thing that sounds like the Twin Peaks High School prom band”. Can’t go wrong with that description! “Bad Reputation” by Haley Bonar

Suuns – Montreal boys from Secretly Canadian that had me hook, line and sinker from the first note. It’s fascinating to watch the smiling singer turn it on and just look pure evil when he sings. If you like fuzz, wildness and and danceable psych, these guys are a mustsee. This video is worth waiting through the ad: Video for Suuns “2020”

Parquet Courts – perfect American punk via Brooklyn and TX. See them live, they don’t need much introduction. Just see them. Even if you think you don’t like punk, the crowd falls in love instantly. Video for “Borrowed Time”

MMOSS – Psychedelic Rock at It’s Swirliest

I walked into Holy Mountain at SXSW an hour early to catch Holydrug Couple and heard the most beautiful noise coming from the back tent stage. These are the moments you yearn for at Southby, the perfect unknown (to you) band. The drummer from Woods (video) joins up with some New Hampshire friends, a flute and an organ and creates a psych sound that is all their own. When seen live, their music breathes, layer upon layer faster and faster until the prettiest blast comes from everywhere around you, letting you live in MMOSS’s noise forcefield for a moment. It’s early in the year, but their latest Only Children is already on my Best of 2013 list.

Showpurses- Picking the Perfect Bag for Concerts and Festivals

I get high anxiety before leaving for a show, fearful that I will forgot something I really need, which can cause overpacking and unnecessary weight. Since concerts and music festivals are often noisy endurance contests, you want to go as light as possible, so I’ve streamlined and created a guide of the basic essentials for showpurses. If you are a nice female, you will find yourself carrying sunglass cases and keys and wallets of the men in your life, so picking out the perfect concert purse is very important. I’ve compiled a few types of bags and their pro’s and con’s, and included a Must Have Item List. Most of this was figured out by touring the country with Phish last year, when suddenly a good showpurse became as necessary as shoes. All advice works on the regular ole sized concert experience, though.

Awesome backpack, right? Can hold soooo much. Can turn into a thirty pound bag real quick. Also, everyone behind you at shows hates you, you are taking up space and a half. Use if carrying camera equipment or laptops, otherwise, just use it for regular backpack stuff, school or carryon bag. Lots of 13-25 year old women will say “Ooh I like your bag!” Buy it here: Deena & Ozzy Mermaid Backpack

I never wear these, they make the back of your skirt or shirt get weird if you dance. Good for walking around when not at the show. Some people can make these work, I just fidget with my outfit, though.

Great bag for festivals or big concerts where beer will be spilled. It’s an army bag with shoulder strap (all showpurses must have a shoulder strap) so you can toss it on that dirty floor and who cares. Room for up to three sunglass cases (important when doors open at 5:30 but show goes until midnight), two separate outside pockets that can hold a water bottle or even a 20 oz. Coke. The pins were all given to me by randos, but the “I’m Killing It” pin glows in the dark. Way important when your purse is on the ground in front of you, you glance down and see it glowing bright, peace of mind. painted by Denver artist Dustin McNa

San Diego Zoo Safari sells these. Water bottle part, shoulder strap, sturdy material that can get beer on it, they know what they are doing. And for $18.95 and it came with water, suntan lotion AND a huge bag of their own trail mix. A deal at that place was more rare than the cheetah. Grab one if you visit.

Important Things that HAVE to be in my Showpurse

water bottle cap – they take them from you at many venues so you can’t throw a full bottle at the band you came to see. Spoilsports. Also, a full water bottle can make someone step on it and slip and win a lawsuit. I always bring a Pepsi one, a Coca-cola one, and one from whatever the local water bottle is. Every vendor is going to be selling one of these, so grab the local water bottle at a gas station near the venue, drink water, save cap. Having your hands free is a top priority, and if I don’t have a top I drink it fast then have to go to the bathroom at the beginning of the show. Who wants that? Bring your cap.

three hair ties – two in case ponytail isn’t cutting it and you have to move to pigtails, one for the girl or guy with longhair who keeps messing with their hair and obviously forgot their hairtie. They will deem you a saint. I’ve also given them to throwing up girls in the bathroom, they are grateful, too.

toothpicks – you’d be amazed

Burt’s Bees Wipes – I carry the smaller packages in my bag and keep a big package in the car. Great for making you feel just a little refreshed after a scorching, disgustingly sweaty summer show. As always, share with others, these things are cheap and a godsend. Buy them here: hippie shower wipes

Earplugs – I wear them before the music, the audience is actually louder than the band usually. They are cheap as anything when bought in bulk on Amazon. Give them to the older dudes that don’t realize how loud some sound systems are now, and parents of children who forgot to bring Baby Banz earmuffs

Now go have fun, and stay hydrated.

Sub Pop New Album Reviews for March

20130321-103905.jpg

The Ruby Suns Christopher – dreamy synth-pop from New Zealand with danceable beats and haunting vocals. I would put this album on when cooking dinner for a special lady friend. Favorite track: “Drammatikk” Kingfisher Call Me Video

Pissed Jeans Honeys – raucous crazy fuzz-filled riffs and high energy, hardcore rock/punk band from Allentown, PA, heard them from the street in sxsw and was completely blown away, they can even get old people to slam dance. I’m pretty sure the drummer is not human, arms should not be able to go that fast. Check them out for loud, sweaty fun. Favorite track: “Cathouse” Bathroom Laughter Video

Mogwai Les Revenants – big, beautiful sounds with minimal vocals, lush instrumentation, the band has been around for years but the new album sounds perfectly modern. I’m a sucker for cello so this album sucked me in right away. Slow, steady, lush soundscapes. Favorite Track: Modern Hungry Face Video

Survival Knife Name That Tune 7″ – Out of Olympia, WA, this 7″ has two fantastic singles on it, brand spanking new band and recording (but not brand new musicians). They have a King Crimson sound to them that lovers of rock will dig. Keep your eyes on these guys. Favorite track: “Name That Tune”

Low The Invisible Way – 20 years later, this band still gives me goosebumps. Minimalistic instruments, shockingly beautiful lyrics, vocals and harmonies. Their new album makes me want to take a road trip to the Badlands. Fans of Neutral Milk Hotel will love this new album, produced by Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy. Melancholy beauty at it’s finest. Favorite track: Plastic Cup Plastic Cup- amazing lyrics

Cayucas- the music of this summer

This band is so California it makes me want to book a flight. They’ve got this Beach Boys/Paul Simon sound that makes you want to quit your crappy day job and go to the beach. I’m a sucker for bands that say their name in a song (looking at you, Morningwood) and this song is a good way to start the morning. The musicians are totally just normal guys as well, nice to see in a world of outlandish rockhobo wear.

get ready to hear this all summer

Foxygen -SXSoWhat

After a rough time at SXSW, some well needed rest brought the band up to speed for a searing, energetic Denver show opening for Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Similar setlist to the last few times I saw them, but it was a relief seeing the singer Sam look happy again. If they aren’t playing a night before a show, go see them. Word around sxsw was that the new album would be a soul one. However they mature and evolve, I can’t wait to see what’s in the future. Watch his floppy white hats make a comeback.

Bill Baird at SXSW 2013: Best Show of the Convention

Image

20130319-163531.jpg

Bill Baird is a gift to music. Part performance artist, part artist artist, part comedian, part computer programmer, part perfect melody creator. Like a young Tom Waits from the future with a beautiful baritone, he won over the crowd with his showcase at Velveeta Room for SXSW this year. Accompanied by a group of orchestral players, Bill showed us yet another side of himself. Attached is a clip from “Bow Down to the Brain” off his new album Spring Break of the Soul, off PauWau Records. Also linked below is the full audio and link to buy this insanely good album. See him when he’s in your town, never miss a Bill show. You never know what you will get, but it’s going to be great.

My Personal Tips for an Awesome SXSW

Image

20130318-223859.jpg photo by leslieloudspeaker

After going to this festival since college, and seeing it explode into what it is now, you get a bad feeling that it’s nothing more than a drunken street festival with music you can barely get into everywhere. 6th Street looks like old Astroworld on a summer day now, so I’ve compiled some tips I’ve found over the years that made the intolerable tolerable again.

1. Move from Austin. I hated it when I lived there for the most part. Working at Frost Tower was a nightmare, could barely get there, then had to hear music and fun all day. Now that I live in Colorado, I adore SXSW.

2. Get a hotel downtown. Like the year before. Traffic gridlocks, shuttle buses can barely get you to downtown, and pretty much forget getting a cab. Book way ahead of the time, it’s worth the money to be able to walk right back to your hotel for air conditioning, change of shoes, a bathroom, etc.

3. Bring various types of shoes and change shoes at least once a day. Even the most comfy shoes start to rub after walking five miles on the hot asphalt.

4. Go Tuesday through Thursday, take off work if you can. You will see almost every band playing before the weekend warriors come in.

5. Lots of phones don’t work well down there. Put it on airplane mode as you walk around, go in the convention center and use their free wifi, air conditions, clean restrooms, and short lines for coffee.

6. If you buy a badge, upload a cute pic beforehand and send it to them. The pictures they take in line are awful.

7. Try to eat before getting down to 6th. Food trucks have crazy lines, eat on Congress and grab some trail mix and stuff.

8. Bring a pen and paper and write your schedule down. That awesome sxsw app doesn’t work for everyone down there.

9. Follow your ears. If you are heading somewhere but hear something good, just check it out. That band you were heading to will play many more times.

10. Stop being afraid of getting closer than 6 feet to the stage. It doesn’t bite, and the band feels more comfortable.

Well, that’s a start! Soon my reviews and Who To Watch list will be up!

New music accessory: Tweedz Earbuds

Image

20130318-214509.jpg photo by Russell Simon

An old high school friend Reed Wotiz created these awesome earbuds that look like braided guitar cables called Tweedz. They come with a few different rubber parts depending on what size you need (a big plus for me because regular iBuds always fall out of my weird small ears). I got a pair for the mass amount of walking I would be doing in Austin for SXSW this year, and they couldn’t have been better for blasting The Kinks and Foxygen. They don’t tangle up, so i just toss them in my pocket or purse and they look way cuter than those dingy white iPod ones. They sound great for such a affordable price, and can be purchased at the Tweedz website in a variety of colors:
