Wake Up and Live with The Quick and Easy Boys- Photos and Review

20140207-155322.jpg

Last night local Bob Marley tribute band Wake Up and Live celebrated Marley’s birthday with a packed house at Cervantes’ Other Side. Thank goodness they took that elevated platform out by the bar, for once no one tripped there! With the new layout and coffee being served, the Other Side is fast becoming a favorite of mine. Portland’s The Quick and Easy Boys from my Jam Bands to Watch list opened, and completely blew me away. I highly suggest checking them out live. Rastasaurus were also on the bill, acting ever more like the polished touring band they are shaping up to be. Read my review at the Westword here:

Blitzen Trapper – PHOTOS – Cultivate Fest

BlitzenTrapper-9

Blitzen Trapper are awesome guys. They were my first face to face interview, and while I pretty much nervously babbled and spit out a couple nonsensical questions that led to an untranscribable interview, they were perfectly sweet and charming and even gave me a new music recommendation (martial arts rockers Dragon Sound from cult classic Miami Connection, a movie the Austin Alamo Drafthouse made popular again, Erik Menteer knows how to recommend). They really energized the crowd at the festival, their first few notes played causing dozens to abandon the guacamole stand line and come get down. Highlight of the show for me was “Black River Killer”, as a friend had had much discussion regarding the key the song was played in (C#m, but live they capo it up). I plan on being at every Blitzen Trapper show from here on out, these guys are just straight up talented and cool.

March Fourth Marching Band this Friday at Bluebird

This Friday, June 7th, the fantastic March Fourth Marching Band will be bringing their circus to the Bluebird. I got the opportunity last year to shoot their Halloween show at the Gothic, and I never knew where to point the camera first. They have really been making the rounds and touring a lot lately, don’t miss this show! I honestly don’t know who wouldn’t enjoy them live.

New Small Black single ready for summer mixtapes

20130502-145820.jpg

Small Black is another great band I caught at Southby. Ladies seem to love these guys, very catchy songs that you can’t help but dance to. Pretty synths build with pleasing vocals, the new album comes out May 14th. Going to sound great mixed in with other poolside music this summer.

No Stranger by Small Black

Akron/Family Concert Review at Larimer Lounge

20130411-084312.jpg photo by leslieloudspeaker

Last night at Larimer Lounge in Denver, Akron/Family played to a packed and excited crowd. It was the second date of the tour for the new album, and the new material sounds amazing live! Extremely loud, beautiful, they create great solid songs wrapped in noise, and at times the audience was told to sing certain notes, being used as yet another instrument. The front was packed with girls NOT giving up their spot right next to the lead singer, Miles Seaton, didn’t know he was such a heartthrob, but for good reason. He’s cute and very nice. One girl begged him for anything from his pockets, he gave her rosemary dust. If you are a fan of the new album Sub-Verses, this show is a must see. Opener Princess Music were great too, as a friend said “he’s got a David Byrne thing going on”. That’s a good good thing.
