Phosphorescent adds Denver Show to their Tour

20130617-125642.jpg

They had a jam packed show at SXSW this year, and now Phosphorescent has added a dozen or so extra U.S. dates, including a Denver stop at Bluebird. Very atmospheric, dense, layered music, the crowd will probably be slowly swaying. This band is definitely made to see live, and I’m sure it will sell out, so get your tickets sooner rather than later!

The excellent video for “Song For Zula”

Robin Thicke and Pharrell sure have a catchy new hit

20130616-134851.jpg

I used to be obsessed with Robin Thicke‘s first album, but as he got more R&B and soulful crooner, I backed away, not my thing. Everything Pharrell touches turns to gold, though, and the new single “Blurred Lines” is no exception. Great simple beat, no melisma, just straight up cool. WOW to the Youtube video having 49 million views, though! Never underestimate the power of “The Voice”. This track is what the new Justin Timberlake single should have sounded like, glad Thicke recorded it: Link to “Blurred Lines” video

LoHi Festival 2013 a Wild and Wonderful Neighborhood Celebration

I had no idea Kyle Hollingsworth was so fancy, check out the detailing on that jacket.

LoHi Festival was even stronger this year than last year! Even though it was pretty jam-packed with people, the logistics were wonderful, and a great mood was in the air. The day started out really, really hot. Too hot to really be hanging out on the asphalt. Eforquestra kicked things off with a bang though. I wasn’t expecting that much awesome organ at 1:00p.m.!

Immediately following their set, Springdale Quartet started up on the smaller stage. I went into this festival pretty blind, and assumed they were bluegrass. Nope, pretty seering rock and roll, actually. The crowd that had seemed roomy before was now crowded together, but the staggering in the time of the sets worked well, no one was in a rush.

Toubab Krewe was up next. Fantastic band, with interesting stringed instruments, they continuously played ever layered grooves This was only 3:00 p.m. and it was full and everyone was getting down. I love my neighborhood.

After being out in the heat since the get go, I went home and took a breather. Which meant living around the corner from the OTHER Highlands Festival, very interesting trying to navigate two multi stage street festivals in a two mile radius. When I came back the weather was all nice, the sky was pink, and the whole place turned up a notch for Kyle Hollingsworth Bandwith Michael Kang from String Cheese Incident.

All in all, the festival was a total success. Seemed like everyone in there was one degree of each other, I guess as to be expected in a block party! I even forgot my wristband when I came back for Kyle, and got me a VIP wristband. Thank you, everyone, it was great seeing all of you!

Kanye West’s “Yeezus” Leaks, He Frantically Streams it on Youtube

20130614-180416.jpg

Kanye West did everything he could to keep his new album Yeezus from leaking early. MStarz News even wrote an article at just 11am describing the security and stating that it won’t be leaked, whoops:

“Though the record is only four days away from coming out, it shows no signs of leaking. According to Buzzfeed, West and co. have figured out a formula for keeping a hot record under wraps until release day.
West was purposefully discrete when recording Yeezus, opting for small studios in hotel rooms to keep everyone not involved in making the record out of the process. West also avoided storing his work on laptops, instead opting for password-protected external hard drives in locked briefcases.
Songs in production were never sent between West’s camp online. This is a famously insecure way to transfer works-in-progress, as West learned during the making of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
Post-production, West kept his album from being mastered until just this week, in order to keep it to himself for as long as possible.
After this process, CDs will be kept in a secure plant and shipped to large chains, where the sealed boxes are under constant video surveillance.”

Nine minutes later it leaked and exploded across the Internet, causing Kanye to quickly put it up on his youtube channel. So who leaked this thing? Someone in the studio where it was mastered, or someone driving the trucks or in the warehouse? I bet they are getting grilled! Guests on the album include Daft Punk, Frank Ocean, and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. Absent is the rumored Skrillex, boy oh boy, maybe that song was under super secret security. Oh who am I kidding, I’d probably love that collaboration, he drops “Alexander Wang” in his lyrics, pretty much all it takes for me!

Stream the new Yeezus album here

Finishing touches by the great Rick Rubin, who’s net worth I just found out is $400 Million. Mega props for being so successful while staying true to yourself and looking like birds live in your beard.

Rogue Wave at eTown Tonight!

20130613-165048.jpg

Tonight in Boulder, Rogue Wave will be at eTown Hall for a radio taping of their show. If you haven’t been to eTown you should definitely check it out. Gorgeous inside, great sound, and fun interviews with the band, plus Rogue Wave are so great. I used to listen to their song “Lake Michigan” video on repeat until I had to force myself to stop. Their new album just came out on June 4th, and after a few listens I am hooked, can’t wait to hear the new material live. Definitely hit up this show, it will be a completely unique experience.

Beth Gibbons of Portishead Recording New Album

20130613-155912.jpg

Beth Gibbons of the well loved band, Portishead is recording a new album with Domino Records, which she hasn’t done solo in 11 years. No word on when it is being released, but I guarantee it will be all sultry and sexy like.

Overalls – Back With a Vengeance

These Free People overalls are on the way:

20130613-112650.jpg I’ll take the dark and the acid wash

Now that it’s super hot, I inexplicably want jeans that have a heavy denim top connected to them. Overalls are looking great these days, all slim and chic, no more farmer’s daughter here! I think they look best with minimal tops (now is your chance to wear those crop tops you are too shy to wear on your own), cute chain jewelry, and wedges or flat strappy sandals with the legs rolled up. Here are a few styles that are on my wishlist:

Ok, these aren’t actually on my wishlist, I already ordered them. You can make your own with some large overalls and basic sewing skills:

I’d wear a neon tube top and some Jordans with these and go breakdancing downtown, check those sweet zips!

For when you want to look like the most stylin’ 6 year old on the playground:

Church overalls:

For more formal overall occasions:

However, not all overalls are ok. Just say no to hooded, distressed, elastic waistband shortalls:

As a bonus, here’s a blog of photos of women wearing overalls. Almost seems fetishy. Actually, after reading it for awhile it’s totally a fetish site run by an older guy. It takes all kinds!: women in overalls

My All Time Favorite Austin Musicians Have a New Single!

20130612-145435.jpg

Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears are my favorite Austin-based band, as well as one of my favorite bands ever. With a full horn section and the best scream in the business, Black Joe can tear the roof off a venue. My husband pretty much only likes Talking Heads and the Grateful Dead, and even he never misses their shows, it’s like going to the funkiest church built. He has a new album coming out and just dropped the first single, and it’s quite a departure from the old sound. Like a punk rock James Brown, he commands the stage while giving his fantastic band time to shine, and I can’t WAIT to hear the new album. Bummer there are no Denver dates on this tour. Maybe next year!

New single “Electric Slave”

And for comparison, Black Joe’s former sound that is still there at his live shows (and also a ridiculously catchy song): Sugarfoot

Jamaican Queens – Band to Watch

20130612-135341.jpg children, do NOT do this

When I received Jamaican Queens album “Wormfood”, I honestly thought it was going to be a trio of Lauryn Hill soundalikes, and there is nothing wrong with that, but I was totally wrong and pleasantly surprised. This group from Detroit has a sound that mixes Flaming Lips, Passion Pit and Cat Power. The layered vocals, rap beats and synths give every song an epic, lush feel. Ultra-catchy, the opening song “Water” even has a 50’s tinged vocal part. It’s almost like a mashup, but using their own music and flowing smoothly. “Sharkteeth” is a beautiful acoustic that sounds like it would fit in an Edward Sharpe set. Their brand of odd pop is hard to describe, with influences such as Three 6 Mafia and Brian Eno. Just give them a listen:

They are playing in Denver at Rhinoceropolis on June 26th. It’s $5 and I guarantee their ticket will never be that cheap again. I can see them opening at Red Rocks next summer.
